Welcome to the Number 10 site.

Is John Prescott the original happy slapper?
Recent articles in the news suggest that a new craze in which young people slap strangers and film the assault on mobile phones is on the increase. Videos of the slaps are sent to other mobile phones and are posted on the internet.

The craze is thought to have coincided with the availability of low cost mobile camera phones. The latest mobile phones have an integral camera that can take a video recording or high quality still image of greater than 1 mega-pixel which can then be sent via Bluetooth, email or messaging.

In a BBC report news of the trend had prompted widespread fear of groups of young people clad in hooded tops, known hoodies. This had lead to the Bluewater shopping centre banning hooded tops and baseball caps, but there was no mention of banning mobile digital camera phones.

The article also reported that the Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott had backed the ban after he was confronted by youths at a motorway cafe. Prescott no stranger to controversy, is thought by some hoodies to have started the happy slapping craze. It was in 2001 that Prescott punched a member of the public in full view of the British media (see the video below). Following a review of the evidence the Crown Prosecution Service concluded there was no realistic prospect of a conviction for reasons of self defense; neither Prescott nor his mates where in possession of a mobile camera phone and he had just been pelted by an egg.  It is also thought that former health minister Edwina Currie would have testified in his defense regarding the dangers of throwing raw eggs.

And just to show that it was all good fun the labour party web site 'John Prescott battle bus'  page makes light of this sort of aggression - Extract from  http://www.labour.org.uk/jpbattlebus   Before leaving Pudsey, John was asked a couple of questions by a local news crew. The reporter claimed the campaign had been a bit dull and might benefit from another Prescott punch. John duly socked him one! Or at least he mimed it, to the amused relief of the reporter and those gathered around.

Number 10  to get facelift.
Number 10 Downing is the center of the UK Government and is home to the Prime Minister Tony Blair. The building is famous all over the world, especially the black Georgian front door. Following the recent election it has been decided to give Number 10 a face lift. The coulour scheme has yet to be decided. It is thought that a change of colour for the door would be welcome.  The most popular contender is red, especially after the election results! Blue is a close second with yellow coming third.
